HONORABLE CAPTAIN MAITLAND('S STRATHSPEY). AKA and see "Captain Maitland's," "Eillis' Jig." Scottish, Strathspey. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB (Surenne): AAB (Athole, Glen, Gow): AABB (Kerr). The tune is attributed Gow's Repository, Part Second (1802) to Nathaniel Gow (1763-1831), the fiddler, composer, music publisher and bandleader and son of the famous Scots fiddler Niel Gow. However, it appears that the tune was first published in Malcolm McDonald's Second Collection (1789). Emmerson (1971) relates MacDonald was a bass player in Nathaniel Gow's band at the time his volume appeared, and likely heard Gow play the tune, although he may not have realized Nathaniel wrote it.
