According to Soucy researcher Jean Duval, the piece is derived from a song, "Iras-tu voir les filles mon p’tit gars" (Will you go see the girls, my little man), but is also a version of a reel best known as "[[Reel à neuf]]," of which there are many versions in Quebec.  Duval thinks the ancestral tune may have been "[[Lord MacDonald (4)]]."
