SIMON BRODIE. AKA and see “Old Simon Brodie.” AKA – “Symon Brodie.” Scottish, Strathspey or Country Dance Tune (4/4 time). E Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB (McGlashan): AABB (Aird, Lowe): ABCD (Stewart-Robertson): AABBCCDDEEFFGGHH (Oswald). The piece can be found in the Bodleian Manuscript (in the Bodleian Library, Oxford), inscribed "A Collection of the Newest Country Dances Performed in Scotland written at Edinburgh by D.A. Young, W.M. 1740,” and in the McFarlan Manuscript of c. 1743. The melody was included in the still earlier (c. 1705) Skene Manuscript, although under the title “Kette/Katie Bairdie.” Glen (1891) also finds it in Campbell's collection (p. 76). There is a rhyme from Herd’s 1776 collection (Ancient and Modern Scottish Songs, II, 230-31), entitled “Simon Brodie,” albeit the protagonist is ‘auld’ and not young, that goes:

Symon Brodie had a cow:
The cow was lost, and he cou’d na find her;
When he had done what man cou’d do,
The cow came hame, and the tail behind her.

Hones, auld Symon Brodie,
Stupid, auld, doited bodie;
I’ll awa’ to the North Countrie,
And see my ain dear Symon Brodie.

Symon Brodie had a wife,
And wow but she was braw and bonnie;
She took the dish-clout aff the bink,
And prin’d it to her cockernonie.
