Buck dancing is a folk dance that originated among African Americans during slavery era, and was originally associated with the North Carolina Piedmont. Later, the dance was also associated with the blues. The steps were weighted heavily on the feet, with the body well-grounded, and it was performed usually be men as a solo dance. Later developments included the 'buck and wing' in which 'wing movements' (large movements of the arms and legs, like flapping) were added to buck steps. Jig dancing was a lighter, quicker and more airy dance step.
