Tune properties and standard notation

HER GOLDEN HAIR WAS CURLING DOWN. AKA - "Her Lovely Hair was Curling Down." AKA and see "By the Old Fairy Fort." Irish, Hornpipe. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The tune was recorded under this title by John Brosnan, apparently obtained from Sliabh Luachra fiddle master Pádraig O'Keeffe, with whom the melody is associated. It is a different tune from Junior Crehan's similarly titled "Her Golden Hair Hanging Down Her Back," however, the first part of the melody (as Paul de Grae points out) is clearly based on the music hall song "And Her Golden Hair Was Hanging Down Her Back" (see note for that tune for more). The second part is different. The alternate title "By the Old Fairy Fort" is from a recording by Cork accordion player Jackie Daly.

Source for notated version: from a manuscript written down by influential Kerry fiddler and teacher Pádraig O'Keeffe [Breathnach].

Printed sources: Breathnach (CRÉ V), 1999; No. 214, p. 104.

Recorded sources: Reedblock Records JBCD 01, John Brosnan - "The Cook in the Kitchen."
