POPPY LEAF HORNPIPE. American, Canadian, Irish; Hornpipe. USA, New England. Canada; Prince Edward Island, Cape Breton. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB (Cole, McNulty, Miller & Perron, Mulvihill): AA’BB’ (Cranford). "Can be used as a Clog" (Cole). The tune first appeared in Ryan’s Mammoth Collection (1883), and its direct successor Cole’s 1000 Fiddle Tunes (1940), from which it was picked up by both Irish(-American) and Canadian fiddlers. It was recorded, for example, in the mid-20th century by Cape Breton fiddler Winston "Scotty" Fitzgerald, and by Irish fiddler Kathleen Gardiner Harrington. County Sligo-born Harrington (1903-1984) was a one-time member of the All-Ireland champion Kincora Ceili Band, formed in 1937, whose members included (at various times) Joe Liddy (fiddle), Tom Liddy (accordion), John Egan (flute), Pat O'Brien (fiddle), Benny Carey (drums), Kathleen O'Connor (piano) and John Joe Gardiner.
