HOME SWEET HOME [2]. American, Canadian; Reel (whole or 2/4 time). USA, southwestern Pa. G Major (Bayard): A Major (Pepper). Standard tuning (fiddle). AB (Bayard): AABB (Pepper). The venerable melody "Home Sweet Home" is here recast as a dance tune. It is cognate with the French-Canadian "Reel de Tadoussac (1)" (see also Isodore Soucy's "Cotillon des vieilles filles," "Set américain 2ème partie (Soucy)" and "Quadrille national 2ème partie). It may be that these tunes developed independently from the original air.
The original "Home Sweet Home" was from John Howard Payne's play Clari, Or The Maid Of Milan, produced in 1823. A string band arrangement of the tune was recorded by Da Costa Woltz's Southern Broadcasters (Galax, Va.) in 1927.
