Composed by Daniel McLaren originally of Taymouth, Perthshire, of whom John Glen (1895) notes: "The first mention of his name is found in the lists of subscribers to Niel Gow's First (1784), Second (1788), and Third Collections (1792) as Daniel McLaren, musician, Edinburgh. In 1794 he published a Collection of his own."
