The melody first appeared in print in John Hinton's Universal Magazine of Knowledge and Pleasure (London, 1757), followed by John Johnson's 200 Favourite Country Dances, vol. 8 (London, 1758). There was a song called "Jenny on the Green" that appeared in John Sadler's Muses Delight (London, 1754) and Clio and Euterpe, or British Harmony, vol. 1 (London, 1758), but it employs a different melody. As "Janey of the Green" it was copied into the 1770 music manuscript collection of Northumbrian musician William Vickers.
