The melody was first published in Henry Playford's Apollo's Banquet, 8th edition (London, 1701) and in John Young's Dancing Master, 14th edition (London, 1709) and in subsequent editions through the 18th (1728). Young was heir to the Playford publishing concern. "America" was also published by Walsh in his Compleat Country Dancing Master (London, 1718). It can also be found in the 1790 music manuscript copybook of London musician Thomas Hammersley.
