DEERNESS MERMAID, THE. Scottish, March (2/4 time). Scotland, Orkney Islands. A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AA'BB. A modern composition by Orcadian fiddler Jennifer Wrigley. Deerness is separated from the body of the East Mainland of Orkney by a narrow sandy isthmus. The Deerness Mermaid was sighted over a few summers during the 1890's by hundreds of eyewitnesses, although since the creature remained some distance from shore, details are rather sketchy.
