DILLY'S FAVORITE. AKA and see "The Squirrel Hunters," "Squirrel Hunting," "Old Common Time," "The Pennsylvania Quickstep [2]," "N....r in/on the Woodpile [1]," "Jenny Put the Kettle On." American, March (2/4 time). USA, southwestern Pa. A Mixolydian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Bayard (1981) identifies his Pennsylvania collected versions as belonging to a large and extremely diverse tune family prominent in the British Isles and the U.S.; this he terms the "Welcome Home" family. British Isles versions are numerous according to him, and include "The Oysterwives Rant," "The Haughs of Cromdale," "The Hillside [2]," "Welcome Home [3]," "(Fare Thee Well) Sweet Killaloe," "Wate You How the Play Began." In southwestern Pa. it was collected mostly from fife sources and was known by them as a "stop beat" piece.

Source for notated version: The Hoge MS (a southwest Pennsylvania fife manuscript), No. 25 [Bayard].

Printed sources: Bayard (Dance to the Fiddle), 1981; No. 220D, p. 175.
