ETTRICK SHEPHERD. Scottish, Air. The words are by Scottish poet James Hogg, setting by Niel Gow junior (c. 1795-1823), the son of Nathaniel and grandson of Niel Gow. He was "a keen amateur musician" who entered the medical profession, but died at age 28. James Hogg himself was known as 'The Ettrick Shepherd'.
