FIVE FIDDLERS, THE. Canadian, Reel. Canada, Cape Breton. F Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. Composed by Cape Breton fiddler and composer Dan R. MacDonald (1911-1976). The melody honors the Cape Breton group called 'The Five MacDonald Fiddlers', which included Dan R. The group, whose members were originally from Inverness County, Cape Breton, consisted of John, Hugh, Bernie, Allan, Dan and pianist Joan MacDonald formed in Detroit after playing together informally at dances and house parties. Although their surnames were MacDonald, only Allan and Joan were siblings, while Hugh was their first cousin. The group recorded two LP's post-World War II and were influential among Cape Breton musicians.
