Tune properties and standard notation
GARDINER'S FAVOURITE [2]. AKA and see "Bird in the Cage, "Donegal Lassies (2)," "John McKenna's (1)," "London Lassies", "Maid in the Rushes (The)," "Streams in the Valley", "Turnpike Gate (2) (The)." Irish, Reel. Ireland, County Sligo. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The "Gardiner's Favourite" title stems from the famous pairing of this tune (which was recorded under the title "Streams in the Valley") with "Gardner's Favorite" in 1928, when it was recorded for Columbia records by the duet of John McKenna (flute) and James Morrison (fiddle). Because "Gardner's Favorite" was the first-named tune of the medley, the title became attached in usage to "Streams in the Valley" as well.
