GRAND OLD MACINTYRE. Scottish, Pipe March (2/4 time). A Mixolydian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Composed by Scots fiddler-composer J. Scott Skinner (1843-1927); his handwritten manuscript [1] notes "Keith Aug: 15, 1888." On the second page of the manuscript, after the variations, Skinner gave that "Mr. McIntyre is Com(mercial): Traveller. Grantown," by which is meant that McIntyre was a travelling salesman. The Univ. of Aberdeen Skinner site speculates: "From Skinner's erratic handwriting, they may have met one evening in a hotel or boarding house in Keith, Aberdeenshire (see JSS0073), where Skinner then lived. Macintyre might have paid Skinner to write the tune, since [Skinner gave him] the final say on the title."
