I HAD THE SHEPHERD’S LAMB. AKA and see “I Wish the Shepherd’s Pet Was Mine.” Irish, Air. O’Sullivan prints the text in Irish and English, giving Joyce as his source. Joyce himself says it “is known all over the Munster counties, as well as in Leinster and Connaught.” Petrie (Ancient Music of Ireland, 1855) gives the song as “I Wish the Shepherd’s Pet Were Mine” and says he obtained it from Teige MacMahon of Clare. Clare tin whistle player and singer Micko Russell had a version he called “I Wish I Had the Yellow Cow.”
