Tune properties and standard notation
HUNT THE WHISTLE. English, Slip Jig. C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody was originally printed in Charles and Samuel Thompson's third country dance collection (London, 1773). It was entered into the 1788 music manuscript copybook of fiddlers John and William Pitt Turner (Norwich, Conn.). "Hunt the Whistell" can also be found in the 1770 music manuscript collection of Northumbrian musician William Vickers, in the same key and time signature, albeit with some apparent errors in transcription.
