BOB SHEAR HARVEST. AKA - "Bob Sheer Harvest." English, Scottish; Old/Triple Hornpipe. England, Northumberland. F Major. Standard tuning. AABB. A once-popular triple hornpipe. The title is a variation of "Rob Shear'd in Herst," a song in the Scots Musical Museum (vol. 6, 1803, No. 543) that poet Robert Burns reworked from an older song (it is set to a different tune in the SMM). "Rob Shore in Harvest" appears in David Young's Duke of Perth collection (1734), followed by Walsh's Second Book of the Compleat Country Dancing Master, 2nd edition (London, 1735, reprinted in the 3rd edition, 1749), Oswald's Caledonian Pocket Companion (London, 1760), and David Rutherford's Compleat Collection of 200 country Dances, vol. 2 (London, 1760). The tune is called for in a Scottish ballad opera entitled The Dissapointed Gallant (Edinburgh, 1738).
