BRIG O' POTARCH, THE. Scottish, Strathspey. E Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. A composition of J. Scott Skinner, from his Logie Collection, dedicated to "Miss Lindsay". Potarch is the name of a hamlet and a bridge built in 1812 over the River Dee near Aboyne, Aberdeenshire. A hostelry dating from the 1740's is still in operation at Potarch, much expanded over the centuries. When the bridge was repaired in 1830 the workmen left two stones weighing some 775 lbs., employed as counterweights. A local stonemasons son, Donald Dinnie, made his reputation by carrying both stones the length of the bridge and back in 1860, and they have ever since been called the Dinnie Stones, and kept at the hotel. Dinnie garnered international fame as a strongman in the Victorian era.
