KICKING MULE. Old-Time, Breakdown. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AA'BB'. Known as a southeastern Tennessee tune. An instrumental version of "Whoa Mule Whoa (1)." The title appears in a list of traditional Ozark Mountain fiddle tune compiled by musicologist/folklorist Vance Randolph, published in 1954. It is perhaps the same tune as "Bucking Mule." It was also in the repertoire of fiddler Tommy Magness (1911-1972), born in north Georgia near the southeastern Tennessee border.
