Conor O'Reilly
CONOR O'REILLY. Irish, Planxty (6/8 time). A Dorian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Composed by blind Irish harper Turlough O'Carolan (1670-1738). Sources derived from the Pigot and the Hudson manuscripts. Hudson himself collected the melody from Edward O'Reilly and printed it in 1841, notes O'Sullivan (1958), who traces the person of the title to Conor O'Reilly of Ballinlough, County Westmeath. O'Carolan perhaps met him at the wedding of Katherine O'More of Ballyna an d Charles O'Donnell, where O'Reilly gave away his neice, the bride. The harper also composed a planxty honoring Katherine (see "Katherine O'More" or "The Hawk of Ballyshannon") in which Conor O'Reilly is mentioned in verse:
Here is a gift of the fairest of women
From Conor O'Reilly to the mailey hills
