FLYING COLUMN [2], THE. AKA and see "Gardiner's Favourite (1)," "Sunny Banks (The)." Irish, Reel. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. A distanced version of "Flying Column (1) (The)". Paul de Grae points out the Bulmer & Sharpley tune is actually "Farewell to Ireland" (in O'Neill as "Farewell to Erin (1)" and in Breathnach's CRÉ III as "Austin Tierney's" {No. 111}) with the parts reversed. The Flying Column refers to mobile IRA attack units in the Irish war for independence from England 1918-1921. "London Lasses (1)" tune family has some similarities.

Source for notated version: fiddler Peter Horan (b. 1926, Kilavil, Co. Sligo) [Flaherty].

Printed sources: Bulmer & Sharpley (Music from Ireland), 1974, vol. 3, No. 17. Flaherty (Trip to Sligo), 1990; p. 66.

Recorded sources: Shanachie 34009, "Frankie Gavin with Alex Finn" (reissue, originally released in 1977).
