The melody, a precursor to the popular American melody "Wagoner," appears under this title in George P. Knauff's Virginia Reels, volume II (Baltimore, 1839). Chris Goertzen, in his book George P. Knauff's Virginia Reels and the History of American Fiddling (2017, p. 60), suggests this title refers to "Peter Francisco," the next tune in Knauff's second volume (a pamphlet of nine tunes) and the name of a hero of the American War of Independence.
