MISS JOHNSTON OF HIL(L)TON [1]. Scottish, Reel. E Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. Composed by Biography:Niel Gow (1727-1806). John Glen (1891) finds the earliest appearance of a tune by this name in Daniel Dow's c. 1775 collection (p. 24). Gow, in his revised First Collection of 1801, notes Miss Johnston of Hilton was the “late Mrs. Oswald of Auchencruive,” for whom see notes for “Annotation:Miss Johnston of Hilton's Fancy" and "Mrs. Oswald of Auchincruive (1).”
Irish collector George Petrie [1] (1790-1866) obtained the tune in Munster and included it in his Ancient Music of Ireland (1855) as "A Cork Reel."
