COUNTESS OF SUTHERLAND'S STRATHSPEY, THE. Scottish, Strathspey. A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. Although Alexander McGlashan published it more than twenty-five years before she did, the strathspey is the composition of Magdalene Stirling (1765-1846), the youngest daughter of Sir William Stirling, 4th Baronet of Ardoch, and his wife Christian Erskine. Her tunes were often published (sometimes attributed to "Miss Stirling of Ardoch") by others before she issued them in a small volume called Twelve Tunes in 1812. Magdalene never married.
