John Sharp's band, the Kentucky Wildcats, was a popular Cumberland Plateau string band in the 1920's and 1930's. Sharp, born in 1894, recorded this tune and others in 1949 on a home disk cutter purchased by his neighbor, the decorated World War I veteran Alvin York. The melody is a variant of "Miller's Reel (1)."
