The melody, a distanced American variant of the Scottish “Duke of Gordon's Rant (The),” was published in George P. Knauff’s Virginia Reels, vol. III (Baltimore, 1839). The similar title "Scott's Return" may be a possibly be a related tune. "Hounds in the Briar Patch" has also been suggested as an alternate title.
