Glen (1891) finds the earliest printing of the tune in Angus Cumming's 1780 collection (p. 4 as "The Dutchess of Buccleugh's Reell"), however the tune had earlier appeared in Neil Stewart's Collection of the Newest and Best Reels &c. (1761) as "Souter's Daughter (The)." As "Dutchess of Buccleugh's Favorite" the tune was printed by the Gows and credited to fiddler-composer Niel Gow. A version of the tune was used as the air to poet Robert Burns's song "Wilt Thou be My Dearie" printed in Johnson's Scots Musical Museum, vol. 5 (1797).
