MARQUIS OF GRANBY'S RANT, THE. English, Country Dance Tune (2/4 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. This particular tune honoring Granby (for whom see "Annotation:Marquis of Granby (The)"). appears unique to London pubisher Charles and Samuel Thompson's 1765 country dance collection. There melodic motif in the first several measures of the first strain is cognate with the first strain of later American tunes "Portsmouth Hornpipe (2)," "Prince Regent's Hornpipe (2)" and "Mathewson's Hornpipe."
