Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The reel first appears in print in William Bradbury Ryan's Ryan's Mammoth Collection (Boston, 1883) as "Rocks of Cashel (1) (The). It was recorded in 1932 in New York by fiddle duo Paddy Killoran and Paddy Sweeney as "Steeplechase (2)," which is the most common title for the tune in modern times. "The Milestone (2)" has sometimes been confused with another reel, "Millstone (The)," due to the similarity in the spelling of the title. In fact, the ('Steeplechase') melody appears as "The Milestone" in Belfast fiddler Sean Maguire's 1975 collection (with Josephine Keegan). Maguire reproduced James Morrison's famous medley of "Flax in Bloom (The)," "Millstone (The)" and "Dairymaid (4) (The)" on Folktrax FTX-375, yet on that recording the tune is spelled 'Milestone' instead of 'Millstone'.
