WHITE PETTICOAT [1], THE (An cota-beag ban). Irish (originally), English; Double Jig (6/8 time). England, North West. E Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. One of the few tunes in O’Neill’s in aeolian minor (nearly all minor-sounding tunes are in dorian). The provenance of the tune is not known--many have remarked on its unusual nature in the context of the bulk of O’Niell’s collection, and the melody is only sourced to Francis O’Neill himself (a very loose source attribution, as O’Neill often put his name to tunes he learned from in the course of years of playing with Irish musicians from Chicago and other areas). “Handy with the Stick," also from O'Neill, is a related and possibly earlier tune.
