SHEPHERD'S INVITATION, THE. English, Air (cut time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABBCCDD. The song "The Shepherd's Invitation" was printed in mid-18th century song sheets and songsters such as Muses Delight (1754, p. 91). The pastoral piece was sung by "Mr. Sulivan" at Sadler's Wells, a London pleasure garden, and words were printed in The London Magazine of September, 1744, as "Phillis; or, the Shepherd's Invitation":

The morning fresh, the sun in east,
New-gilds the smiling day;
The lark forsakes his dewy nest,
The fields around are gaily dress,
Arise, my love! and play, and play,
Arise, my love! and play.
