MARY O'NEILL'S FANCY (Rogha Iníon Uí Néill/Neill). AKA and see "Miss Mary O'Neill's Fancy," "Mouse behind the Dresser (The)." Irish, Reel. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. According to Nicholas Carolan (1997), this tune was named for a sister of fiddler Sergeant James O'Neill (originally from County Down and Belfast), Captain Francis O'Neill's chief collaborator for his Irish music collections. Chief O'Neill wrote in a letter to A.P. Graves that Mary was "quite skillful on the mandolin and violin." The tune is a variant of "Maude Millar." The first strain is also similar to "My Love is Fair and Handsome (1)" and "MacLean's Favorite."
