CLOG DANCE (4). AKA and see "Castle Rag Hornpipe (The)," "Railway Hornpipe (2),” “Steam Packet Hornpipe (2).” English, American; Clog or Hornpipe (cut time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. 19th century Boston, MA, music publisher Elias Howe credited the composition of this untitled clog dance tune to "Backus", presumably an American blackface minstrel performer and musician. Dan and biography:Zeke Backus are names that both crop up occasionally in the Howe collections. However, it is a version of an earlier tune well-known in England that goes by several titles in musician's manuscript collections, including "Castle Rag Hornpipe (The)," "Railway Hornpipe (2)" and "Steam Packet Hornpipe (2)."
