TARTAN ON THE HEATHER, THE. Irish, Highland (whole time). Ireland, County Donegal. A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AA’B. Mick Browne remarks that Donegal fiddler James Byrne recorded a Glencolmcille version of this highland on the album 'The Brass Fiddle', and says "A version similar to Doherty's was also associated with Frank Cassidy." Nigel Gatherer compares the melody to the Scots strathspey "Miller of Drone (1) (The)" and the Irish version "Miller of Draughin/Drohan (The)" (as well as the American derivative, "Grey Eagle"). The resemblance to "Miller of Drone (1) (The)" is more pronounced in the second strains of the tunes, but there is a general melodic resemblance in the first strains as well.
