STAR HORNPIPE [3], THE. AKA - "Clog de l'étoile." AKA and see "Star of the East." American, Hornpipe (whole time). B Flat Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Provenance unknown. Boston music publisher Elias Howe's employee, William Bradbury Ryan, included the tune (likely obtained from Howe's earlier publication) in his Ryan's Mammoth Collection (1883) under the title "Star of the East." W.B. Laybourn also printed a nearly identical version in Köhler's Violin Repository, Book 2 (1885, p. 109) as "Second Star Hornpipe," giving composer credit to 'G. Tate.'

The tune was recorded on a 78 RPM record in Montreal in 1931 by violinist Joseph Larocque (1873-1946).
