GLASS OF BEER, THE. AKA and see "Chase Her through the Garden," "John Stenson's No. 2," "Johnny Maguire's Reel," "Listowel Lasses (2)," "McFadden's Reel (2)." Irish, Reel. B Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB (Mulvihill): AABB (Mallinson). A well-known traditional session tune, heard in sessions today. It has been speculated that it was perhaps composed by John McFadden, an Irish traditional musician in Chicago and a contemporary and source of Captain Francis O'Neill. O'Neill's "Pick Your Partner" is a similar tune supplied by McFadden. However, it is also contained in the music manuscript collection (under the "Glass of Beer" title) of Rev. Luke Donnellan (1878-1952), an ms. probably not original with him but the work of an unknown but able fiddler who collected in the Oriel, Ulster, region over a lifetime of playing. This suggests the tune was in circulation in Ireland in the latter 19th century. "John Stenson's No. 2" is also a closely related tune. Compare also with James S. Kerr's "Piper's Glass (The)."
