TIMOTHY SHARP. English, Jig (6/8 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody was originally published in Charles and Samuel Thompson’s Compleat Collection, vol. 3 (London, 1773). As with numerous other tunes from the Thompson’s 1773 collection, it was entered into the 1788 music manuscript copybook of fiddlers John and William Pitt Turner (Norwich, Conn.).

Timothy Sharp is the main character in a stage play called The Lying Valet (1741) by London actor, playwright and empresario wikipedia:David_Garrick. The character's lies attempt to help his penniless master pass for a man of fortune. Thompson (Compleat Collection of 200 Favourite Country Dances, vol. 3), 1773; No. 174.
