WEST'S HORNPIPE [1]. AKA and see “Czar of Russia's Favorite," "Hip Hornpipe," "Seige of Belgrade (1)," "Skelton's Hornpipe.” English, Scottish; Hornpipe. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB (Athole, Skye): AA'BB (Kerr). The melody was first published in London by Thomas and John Preston. It was entered a few years later into the large music manuscript collection of fifer John Buttery of the 37th Regiment (British). Under the title “Czar of Russia's Favorite” the hornpipe was printed in Ryan’s Mammoth Collection (1883), issued by Boston publisher Elias Howe. Some see similarities to "Morpeth Rant (1)."
The hornpipe was entered into a few widespread musicians' copybooks, including those of Lawrence Leadley (c. 1850, Helperby, Yorkshire), William Clarke (1858, Feltwell, Norfolk, East Anglia), Joseph Hooves (New Ipswich, Ma., 1817), fifer John Buttery (34th Regiment, Lincoln), and Irish fifer John Miller (Strabane, Londonderry, 1798).
