WILLOW, WILLOW [2]. English, Ballad Air (6/4 time). A Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). ABC. The air was re-set by Pelham Humfrey after the English Restoration in Stafford Smith's Musica Antiqua. Chappell (1859) says this setting for the lyrics is written in a form "much in vogue" in mid seventeenth century Italy (consisting of a different melody for each stanza connected by a short refrain passage), and which had travelled to Paris where Chappell believes Humfrey picked it up.
