The first sound recording of the jig was under the title "Tripping up the Stairs" in 1921 by "Patrolman" Frank Quinn, a fiddler and accordion player originally from Ireland who worked as a policeman in New York City. The tune has been attributed to Bronx fiddler and accordion player John McGrath (1900-1955)[1], although this awaits verification. Several tunes once attributed to McGrath (1900-1955, originally from Rossport, Erris, County Mayo) have turned out not have been composed by him, and McGrath attributions need to be vetted thoroughly.
