The tonality is blurred to a great extent between minor and major versions (often A mixolydian/d mixolydian), as the 'C' note can be either sharped or natural. An early version of the reel can be found in the mid-19th century music manuscript collection of Siabh Luachra musician D. Curtin (No. 38, p. 15 [1]) under the title "Lasses of Bally Cahill."

A version of the tune can be found in volume 1 (p. 249) of the large mid-19th century music manuscript collection of County Cork cleric and uilleann piper James Goodman under the title "My love she wears a dandy." Goodman also entered a version of the tune in volume 2 of his collection as "My Love is but a Lassie Yet (3)."
