HUNT THE WHISTLE. English, Slip Jig. C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody was originally printed in Charles and Samuel Thompson's third country dance collection (London, 1773). It was entered into the 1788 music manuscript copybook of fiddlers John and William Pitt Turner (Norwich, Conn.). There is a tune by the same title (or, rather, "Hunt the Whissell") in the 1770 music manuscript collection of Northumbrian musician William Vickers, and, while it is also in 9/8 time, it is melodically dissimilar.
