JUDGE'S DILEMMA, THE. Scottish, Jig. A Mixolydian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABBCCDD. Composed by Pipe Major Donald MacLeod [1] (1917-1982), and one of his more popular tunes. MacLeod was born in Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, in the Scottish Hebridean Islands. At age 21 he became a piper for the Seaforth Highlanders, gaining the rank of Pipe Major within four years. He served in World War II, but was taken prisoner by the Germans at St. Valery, but was lucky and skillful enough to escape, and eventually made his way back to England, where he rejoined his command. In 1945 he piped his battalion across the Rhine during an assault crossing -- even though he had been forbidden to do this by his commanding officer.
