The melody appears in the 1816 collection of Captain Simon Fraser (1773-1852), of Inverness-shire, in the Highlands near Loch Ness. In his publication Fraser noted the tune was "sung with inimitable humour by Alexander Fraser, Esq. of Culduthel and the editor's grandfather."
