MAID BEHIND THE BAR [2], THE (An Gearrchaile taobh thiar den Bheár). AKA and see "Bruisus (The)," "Clonmel Lassies," "Kiss the Maid Behind the Barn," "Kiss the Maid Behind the Barrel." Irish, Reel. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). ABCD. Breathnach (1963) states that O'Neill's "Kiss the Maid behind the Barrel" is a version of this tune, while Petrie (1905) prints five versions of the tune under the titles "Clonmell Lasses," "Bruisus (The)," "Kiss the Maid Behind the Barrel." The tune is best-known as "Kiss the Maid Behind the Barrel" today, although this title is often confused with the similar name "Maid Behind the Bar." Philippe Varlet says it was recorded (under the "Maid Behind the Bar" title) in the 78 RPM era by such musicians as James Morrison and Tom Ennis. Ennis, maintains Varlet, paired it with the similar sounding "Trim the Velvet" and mixed the parts of the two tunes up as he played. Others do not hear the part switches.
