UPON A SUMMER’S DAY. AKA and see “Garland (1) (The),” “Gipsie’s Round.” English, Country Dance Tune (6/4 or 6/8 time). D Dorian (Chappell, Raven): F Minor (Barnes, Sharp). Standard tuning (fiddle). AB (Chappell, Raven): AABB (Sharp): AABBB (Barnes). The air (whose title comes from a ballad) was published by John Playford in his first edition of The English Dancing Master (1651); in later editions (1670 90) it is called “The Garland” after another ballad written to it. The air also appears in Playford's Musick’s Delight on the Cithren (1666).
