NEW WAY OF WOOING [1], THE. AKA and see "Cocks Louns walie hoyn." Scottish, English, American; Country Dance Tune (2/4 time). England, Northumberland; USA, Massachusetts. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. The melody sounds Scottish. Some of the earlier printings of the tune can be found in dancing master Daniel Wright's collection of c. 1740 (p. 9) and John Walsh's Caledonian Country Dances, and it is one of the "missing tunes" from William Vickers' 1770 manuscript of dance melodies popular in Northumberland. In America, it appears in Whittier Perkins' violin copybook MS (Massachusetts, 1790) which is reproduced in facsimile on p. 39 of Music in Colonial Massachusetts, I, 1980.
