BIRMINGHAM MARCH, THE. AKA and see "Annotation:Chimes." English, March. England, Shropshire. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The second strain of the tune is the same as the second part of the Adderbury stick dance tune "Lads a Buncham (1)." Under the title "Chimes" the melody appears in the 1785 music manuscript collection of American flute player Henry Beck. The name Birmingham (Warwickshire) derives from the Anglo-Saxon place-name 'Beorma's ham', meaning 'the homestead of Beorma'.
